A FEW DAYS IN SINGAPORE

16th - 19th April 2019

16/04/19

We left the luxury of our Flores hotel and headed mid afternoon to catch our flight from Labuan Bajo to Singapore via Denpasar, Bali.

The plane was very interesting, haha! Megan had a window seat... without a window! And the girl behind us had two windows... rather greedy if you ask me!!

The flight was very quick though and before we knew it we were on our next flight from Denpasar to Singapore. We ended up on a massive long hall KLM plane that was heading to Amsterdam but just stopping over in Singapore, so lucky us as we had luxury for our 2 1/2 hour flight!

We made it to Kirsten and James’ at around 11:30pm and headed straight to bed!

17/04/19

Deciding to take in the full Singapore experience, we caught the train to Marina Bay in central Singapore. Luckily Kirsten and James had some Singapore transport cards so we easily jumped on and off! We bought an Oreo cheesecake pastry at the station for breakfast for Megan and I to share... only to find out that you’ll be fined $500 for eating or drinking in the station and on the train. No wonder it’s so clean!

So the hardest part of the day was having to watch the pastry stay in the bag for the whole 1 hour train ride. I was contemplating that it may be worth the $500 fine to eat it after all....

Our first stop when we arrived in the city was Lau Pa Sat, a Victorian foodcourt that had evey type of Asian food you could possibly imagine! The atmosphere was incredible with people milling about everywhere. My meal of rice, tofu and veggies cost me $2.80... not too bad at all!

After we recharged our batteries with some good food, and a very very delightful iced lemon tea which I purchased, we went out to explore more of the city. We walked along the waterfront with the main theatre building (the spherical shaped one in the photo below) and of course to see the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel.

We managed to end up in so many shopping centres because Singapore is literally full of them!! And all the expensive stuff too (Gucci, YSL etc). I obviously didn’t go into one of those shops as I would have been kicked out!

It was Meggie’s birthday the following day and of course, cake was needed to celebrate the occasion! Just like Megan bought me a cupcake in Indonesia, she decided she wanted cheesecake and I treated her (and I guess myself haha) to some birthday cheesecake in order to celebrate! Hooray!

Walking further into the main city, we went to an amazing little quirky street called Haji Lane that Kirsten recommended where they had some amazing murals all over the walls of the street. Also some quirky shops that we had a browse in!

Somehow we managed to find ourselves weaving down some backstreets and came across a market full of everything you couldn’t possibly want. It was like an explosion of crap and of course I had to purchase some of that crap... an I ❤️ SG T-shirt to add to my collection. Update: I still don’t regret the purchase! This was actually one of my favourite places to walk around, there was just so much to look at.

After weaving around the shops we decided to head to Marina Bay to see the super trees and the Marina Bay Sands hotel from a different angle. The trees were absolutely amazing, much taller than I had anticipated!

We walked along the walkway through the trees where we got to see some amazing views! It’s incredible how they built both the trees and the hotel which are amazing structures! The time of day that we went meant that for the first time, we weren't actually sweating and could enjoy everything around us.

Because we loved Lau Pa Sat so much the first time, we went a second! For $6.50 (about £4) I was able to get a pile of rice, two curries, Dahl, naan bread and a poppadom! What a bargain! It was so delicious! Afterwards we then went back on the train to retire for the night...

18/04/19

Woooooo! What an exciting day! Not just going to Universal Studios, but it was Meggie’s birthday!!!

And what a beautiful way to start the morning... BirthYAY!

She opened some cards and prezzies and then we had some birthday waffles that Kirsten had previously made - the ideal breakfast to celebrate!

We headed straight to Universal Studios on Sentosa Island so that we could arrive by 10am when the park opened and we made excellent timing! The taxi driver talked my ear off the whole way so as you can imagine, I was drained by the end of the 30 minutes before the real fun had even begun!

We had such an amazing time going on as many rides as possible and enjoying the spirit! As soon as we got in we went to the biggest thrill seeker ride and managed to get on it the first time straight away without queueing and then a second time with only a 5 minutes wait! What luck! Must be Megan’s, not mine...

We also went to one of the stunt shows that was very entertaining! The story was a bit confusing to be honest, but it was still good fun to watch and Megan watched the whole thing with her ‘BirthYAY’ glasses on. In the true birthday spirit!

And now for the most exciting part of the day! Meeting our true hero, Gru from Despicable Me! This was actually such a big highlight for me.... meeting the real Gru... Wow!

In the evening we met James and Kirsten for dinner, who kindly treated us to a really delicious Indian on a rooftop restaurant, overlooking the city. It was so kind of them to take us out for a meal for Megan’s birthday - such a yummy curry!

Afterwards we walked around the city for a little bit to the water front, only to find that the famous merlion was covered in scaffolding (but luckily we didn’t actually know it existed anyway haha)!

Our adventures in Singapore ended on such a good evening, allowing us to see the beautiful city at night!

19/04/19

Having a chilled day was much needed, allowing us to catch up on our diaries and recharge ourselves! Kirsten and James showed us around the school they work at which was amazing, very different from what the likes of Megan and I went to, haha! And then later in the evening we boarded our bus to Malacca.

Next stop: Malacca, Malaysia
