GILI AIR & KUTA, INDONESIA
25th - 30th March 2019

If you think you've already visited the most beautiful place in the world you’re wrong, unless it’s Gili Air. Situated an hour and a half ferry journey from Bali, Gili Air is one of three islands off of the Northwest of Lombok. Its beautiful beaches, turquoise water and friendly locals had us hooked from the very start. Amazingly, the Gili Islands do not allow motor transport at all. Therefore, the only mode of transport was either cycling or horse and cart.
We stayed in a lovely hotel called Mowie’s, an 8 minute walk from the ferry port and we decided to conserve the horses energy and take ourselves down to the hotel instead. We had a cute family room for four, so we were very excited to be in one room all together haha! One of the most amazing welcome drinks was served to us, dragonfruit!
Our hotel had its own beach area and a bar where we had lunch. I had jackfruit tacos which were honestly the best thing I have ever had! And a few mojitos too to celebrate being on our second adventure!
(this last picture is particularly delightful haha!)
Later in the evening we met up with Kirsten and James from Singapore and all had a meal together. Gili Air is ridiculously cute with its restaurants lining the beachfront and lights strung all over the roads and up the trees.
The following day we enjoyed one of the best breakfasts ever. Sourdough toast with eggs, hummus, beetroot spread and a spinach ball. As well as fresh juice. It set us up perfectly for the dives that we were doing after!
(I’m still currently waiting for the dive photos but they will be added as soon as I receive them).
We did two dives, one called Shark point in between Gili T and Gili Meno. Luckily for us there were no sharks roaming the water, instead some massive turtles. One swam right past me but for some reason I couldn’t get the gopro to switch on so that was a moment just for me - truly incredible. The second dive was at Bounty Wrek off of Gili T which had a sunken barge. There was so much marine life around the barge it was crazy. On our dives we managed to see turtles, a moray eel, stingray, stone fish, clown trigger fish, starfish and even more! They were amazing!
The afternoon we spend chilling on our beautiful beach out the front of our hotel! At 4:30pm we then hired bikes and cycled to do a yoga session further inland on the island. We spend an hour and a half in pure bliss, finding our inner peace and relaxing!
At our restaurant in the evening we got a beautiful sunset and then watched a movie on a big screen on beanbags on the beach. Free popcorn too!! It was such a good way to end the day!
I loved spending every minute with my wonderful Mum, a little pre Mother’s Day!
Sadly our time on Gili Air was over and we got a ferry back to mainland Bali and then a taxi to Kuta (which is right next to the airport). We stayed in Grandma’s Plus Hotel and explored the markets in Kuta for our last evening. We managed to come away having purchased everything bar the kitchen sink!
I couldn’t be more grateful for the week we’ve spent on both Nusa Penida and Gili Air - such a fab way to start our Indonesia trip! We sadly had to say goodbye to our gorgeous travel buddies but are excited to see them when we get home! More adventures to come yet!!
