KOH PHANGAN

11th - 13th May 2019

11/05/19

Hello again! Welcome to Koh Phangan! We travelled after my morning of diving on the ferry for only an hour and a half before we arrived. Arriving at the port, we got two bike taxis that took us to our hostel called Slumber Party. Known as a party hostel, we were expecting good things for the night of the Half Moon Party!

The party didn't kick off until about 9pm in the main hostel social place next to the pool, where we had some drinks, played some cards and covered ourselves in fluorescent paint... some artists were more kind than others...

Like, why do I have a green stripe down my chin and chest? Thanks for whoever did that!

The evening at the hostel was awesome! Proper sing along songs to get everyone in a good mood, so we had high expectations for the Half Moon Party itself. Apparently it is supposed to be better than the Full Moon Party so as you can imagine, we were pretty pumped!

At 12am (late night for us), we got in taxis (the pickup vans) and got taken to the party. They dangerously squeezed as many people in the back as possible, which caused one girl to actually fall off the back whilst driving... she had to go to hospital but was ok! She was actually Megan’s dive buddy in Koh Tao!

The grounds of the party were awesome, it was in a jungle and basically looked like a festival... However, the music was repetitive techno music everywhere that you couldn’t dance to, it didn’t have any words either... so yeah... disappointment to say the least! We stayed there for a few hours but the music was so bad and the alcohol was so expensive (850 baht for a bucket instead of the usual 200/300) that at about 2:30am we left. Ended up getting a toastie and water from 7-Eleven haha!

Our second day on Koh Phangan was a slowww start... we went down to explore the beautiful beach that was a 3 minute walk away from our hostel and had lunch at another hostel on the beach. I had Pad Thai which has become a regular meal of mine since being in Thailand, along with Penang Curry. As you can see from the photos, this beach was stunning so it was good to make the most of it as it was our last beach of the trip!!!!!!

We explored the area and found a lovely little quirky restaurant on the side of the road with seating and tables completely made of bamboo. We had some authentic Thai food of course and I also had a plate full of banana fritters with honey that has become an obsession of mine! Usually you get three fritters to a plate but this time I literally got like 10... I can eat a lot... but not that much!!!!!!!!!

We've discovered that we love finding local restaurants on the side of the road where you can get a big meal for about £2. What a deal! Today was very chilled, recovering from the night before...

We decided to have only a quick stop on Koh Phangan as we had spent more time on the other islands (particularly Koh Tao). At this point we were ready to say goodbye to the beaches and head up North to Chiang Mai. During the day we took advantage of the hostel pool and soaked in some sun.

When the sun got a bit unbearable we visited the local market and shops to get some food supplies for our overnnight bus up to Bangkok which we would be getting on later in the day. They had all sorts at the market as you can imagine. The markets are definitely the best part of travelling!

Knowing we needed a decent meal before getting on the bus, I of course got a Penang curry with tofu, that was absolutely delicious! I just can’t get over how much I love Thai food! This was again in a quirky restaurant on the side of the road...

At 5:30pm, we caught our pickup taxi to the port to catch our ferry...

On the ferry we were lucky enough to get a beautiful sunset across the water. Perks of getting a ferry late in the evening! Goodbye Thai islands!

And before long we were on our bus to Bangkok! We received a little pillow, blanket and meal which was a luxury that we weren’t expecting! Not so much of a luxury for me because the meal turned out to have chicken in it. Sad. But Mum and Meanie both said they got bad food poisoning from bus food so maybe it was a blessing in disguise!

Enjoy this final picture which sums up our bus journey...

Next destination: Bangkok
