KUALA LUMPUR
21st - 23rd April 2019

After a few hours journey on the bus traveling from Malacca, we arrived in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia located halfway down the West coast.
We booked the coolest hostel up on the 26th floor of a building, overlooking the city (can’t really argue for £4 a night). The beds were actually pods, so you had your own mini room to stay in which Megan and I were so excited about because we hadn't slept in a room apart for so long!
We also met up with some guys that we’d met in New Zealand which was really cool, they stayed in the same hostel so when we arrived we sat for a while chatting and catching up before we ventured into the city.
We found a good market street that had some lovely Mie Goreng (noodles). I’m pretty sure that is all they eat in Malaysia and all of Indonesia as well!
Afterwards we caught a Grab (best way to get around the city, essentially like an Uber and really cheap) to Batu Caves which I was really excited to see!

It was incredible! There was a giant gold statue and multicoloured steps that led up to the entrance, we got ripped off and had to pay 3RM to hire a sarong to wrap around our waists in order for us to go in! Pretty impressive before we had even got into the caves!!
The caves themselves were beautiful with towering walls and bright colours everywhere. What was also really impressive was the views looking back after we’d climbed the steps, pretty spectacular looking back on the city. My favourite part was definitely the multicoloured steps though, SO pretty!
We went with our NZ crew so we had to get some pretty edgy photos...
The best part was all the monkeys that were running up and down the steps. Particularly the ones carrying their little babies... We didn’t know they had any monkeys running around there at all so it was a great surprise when we managed to see so many! The greatest entertainment of the day!
After we had explored the Batu Caves and enjoyed walking around the little market with the tacky tourist stuff, we headed back into the city. We walked to the Petronas Twin Towers which are famous in the Kuala Lumpur skyline. And they really were beautiful, especially at night...
Because we definitely didn't have the money to spend on cocktails but #yolo, we went to a place called Traders Hotel and went to their bar on the 36th floor. We had one of the best cocktails ever (just one) which was made with pineapple juice and lychee. We did get a happy hour deal so actually our cocktails were only £5 each (expensive for Malaysia though)!
The bar had amazing views right out onto the Petronas Towers and the sparkling city which was a pretty incredible view...
On the walk back to our hostel the city was buzzing with live music, markets and completely lit up with lights (introducing incredible amounts of light pollution haha). The day ended very well with us crawling into our individual pods and not having to speak to each other!
The next day we didn’t even wake up until past 9am (crazy for me as I‘m usually up most mornings at about 6am) because our pods were so dark and cosy! I woke up and looked at my phone expecting it to be 5am because it was so dark... instead it was past 9am - time to get up!
We had a very chilled day where we caught up on some diary writing, reading, photo editing and enjoyed the amazing view from our hostel. The main area was so lovely, half of it went out onto a balcony with loads of seating as well as a view straight onto the Petronas Towers in the distance! This was by far one of our favourite hostels on our travels so far and had such a cool vibe with it!
After chilling most of the day, we headed into the city again when it was dark and saw an amazing fountain display on a pond outside the Petronas Towers. It was a bit of a shock when it started because we were sat by the pond peacefully enjoying the lights and suddenly music erupted and the show began (we weren’t expecting it haha). But it was great to watch and there were loads of other people enjoying it too! What a great way to end our KL experience before we head to Penang, north west Malaysia.
Next stop: Penang
