MALACCA IN A DAY: MALAYSIA

19th - 21st April 2019

We arrived late on the 19th April from Singapore in a rather swanky bus with massive reclining seats - we weren’t expecting that treat!

When in Malacca, we struggled to find our hostel for a while, racing against the clock to get there before 11pm when checkin closed. But we finally managed to find it after asking people and got to the hostel, La Vie En Rose. And what a beautiful room we received... back to basics for us! But we don’t mind, all part of the adventure!

The following morning we got ourselves organised and went out into Bandar Melaka which is part of Malacca (very confusing haha)! It’s one of the main parts so we came across quite a few Chinese tourists.

Below are photos of our hostel from the outside. Not that visible in the dark as you can imagine so no wonder we couldn’t find it for ages!

I was really surprised at how colourful the city was and the hustle and bustle that came with it. A lot was happening and all at once too! We explored some of the tacky tourist shops (as you have to) and walked around some of the main buildings which are inspired by the Dutch. The centre was very busy!

In the centre they had rickshaws crazily decorated with different themes from Hello Kitty to Frozen to Pokemon... the Chinese tourists absolutely loved them haha! They also all play ridiculously loud music that we luckily got to hear alllll night - a real treat! (For those who struggle with identifying sarcasm... that was sarcastic)!

After we’d had enough of the hustle and bustle of the main square, we explored some of the side roads which had some really beautiful buildings and architecture!

There were also so many murals painted onto the side of buildings as well as brightly coloured walls. I didn’t realise how arty and cultural Malacca was and I absolutely loved it!

One of our favourite walls we found was a multicoloured geometric painting full of different shapes... it definitely had some Dutch influence!

A river runs directly through the centre, very close to our hostel, so we had some fun following it along and seeing all of the riverside cafes and restaurants. We didn’t actually go into any but it was very beautiful walking along!

We decided to have lunch back at our hostel as the owner makes hummus and falafels from scratch. So we decided to try it out and it was absolutely delicious. The hummus maybe could have had a bit more flavour but you could tell that it had been freshly made... the flatbread too, which was served with it! Yummy!

After chilling out in our room for a bit to avoid the sweltering mid afternoon heat, we headed back out into the market we’d seen the night before that gets set up down the street every weekend. Again, it had everything you could possibly imagine and I absolutely loved it!!

I decided to try one of the local delicacies, the steamed panda (haha, actually just something I found at one of the stalls). I had absolutely no idea what it was, only that it had something to do with chocolate (which obviously got me)! Turns out it was like a donut and I actually rather enjoyed it. They had loads of different flavours, some more unusual than others but I thought I’d play it safe - maybe next time I’ll be more adventurous knowing what it actually is!

Although our stay in Malacca was very short, we made the most of the time we had and enjoyed the beautiful city!

Next stop: Kuala Lumpur
