MAORI VILLAGE IN ROTORUA

14th February 2019

Hello all! We left Waitomo and headed to Rotorua stopping off for a walk in the morning to stretch our legs...

We then headed to the Maori Village in Rotorua which was incredible!! We started off with afternoon tea - an assortment of biscuits, cakes and traditional Maori scones which were like doughnuts yummmm! The family who own the experience also did a speech and sang to us as it is the traditional thing to do before feeding guests.

We were then shown our rooms and were told about the buildings and their intricate carvings that represent their ancestors.

After we’d swttled in we participated in a Maori game which was essentially stick throwing. This required a lot of hand eye coordination that some people didn’t have haha! We learnt a variety of sequences but didn’t quite perfect it! It was SO much fun! We also learnt a song to help pronounce Maori vows and ended up performing it to about 100 people in the evening show after dinner!

Later on in the evening other buses arrived for the evening show. We got taken around different stations in the woods explaining how to cook food, the origins of the Maori people and arts and crafts. They also performed songs and danced which was incredible - finishing on the Haka which was scary haha but amazing to watch!

For dinner they served us steamed veggies and meat (for those who eat it) cooked in the ground. There was so much to eat! And then when the other buses, who were there for a the show left, everyone on the Kiwi bus spent the evening in hot tubs drinking - not a bad way to end the night!

- A
