MILFORD SOUND

2nd March 2019

For those who don’t know, Milford Sound is a fiord (not actually a sound), created by a glacier and is located in the South West of the South Island. The fiord is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 metres high. The area has an average rainfall of 252 inches a year which is crazy! If you thought the UK was bad, think again.

Although usually hundreds of temporary waterfalls are created due to the level of rain, we saw Milford Sound on a very dry and sunny day. Therefore, we only saw one major waterfall.

We had a boat trip through the fiord and were luckily enough to see seals as well as bottlenose dolphins that are very common in the waters.

The boat pulled up close to the waterfall, that is supposedly 3 times the height of Niagra Falls, and some people got absolutely drenched. It was such a beautiful waterfall to get close to.

Even the journey back was beautiful as we drove through the mountains as well as a tunnel which took 19 years to build.

I cant believe you had such brilliant weather. All Easy and I saw was MIST, only seeing about 2’ in front of us. Was it Lady Bowen falls you saw? The waterfalls were fab though, one of the plusses. Next day at Doubtful Sound was a brilliant day, the weather changes rapidly. You were so lucky.
