PAIHIA, BAY OF ISLANDS
14th - 18th March 2019

After flying from Wellington to Auckland, we took an Intercity bus to Paihia which was a 5 hour journey. The buses up north are so good, very comfortable with Wifi so can’t complain!
The first night we stayed in a hostel called Saltwater Lodge and had a relaxed evening. In the morning we used their free bikes and rode along the waterfront.
We also saw the location in which some Maori Chiefs signed the Waitangi Treaty and poles are displayed to represent the different chiefs. Afterwards we played some tennis as we could use the court for free.
The second night we stayed in our favourite hostel of the whole trip called Mousetrap Backpackers.
It was a small quirky hostel which had uneven floors, nooks to read and sit, and a terrace out the top surrounded by plants. It had such a homely vibe and the owners were so lovely, a very personal experience staying there. We also met some lovely people, one being a Spanish guy called Gonzalo who we ended up spending most of our time with. As the hostel was much smaller than the generic ‘Base’ hostels in NZ, we met some more travellers that were on working visas and staying in NZ for much longer periods of time.
We ate our meals out on the terrace at the top of the building, looking off to the ocean directly opposite...
During our time in Paihia we drove over to Russell, with our new Spanish friend who had a car, and chilled out on the beach as well as exploring the town that was once New Zealand’s first capital.
The town of Paihia was beautiful and we got some gorgeous sunsets! We had planned to stay 3 nights but instead decided to stay an extra night as we loved it so much!
Megan made the most delicious meal, Chilli con carne, which was to die for!!!! A deifnite highlight of our trip!
On our last night we went out to some local bars for St Patrick’s Day (as they celebrate it hugely - just another excuse to drink haha) and we ended our final night going swimming off the beach!
Back to Auckland we go for the remainder of our time in New Zealand!
